I think that I have a grand rounds topic! It came to me on Friday in the form of a greyhound with hemorrhagic streptococcal pneumonia.
Yesterday, I headed to London to be a tourist once again. The trains here are so fast that they make your ears pop when they go into tunnels.
I went to Mass here, at St. Paul's Cathedral. It is more beautiful on the inside with black-and-white-tiled floors, life-sized statues of men and horses, dark mahogany wood-work, two gold organs, massive murals, crystal chandlers, and walls that glitter with gold. The church is older than our country.
They grow big, beautiful roses in the cathedral's garden.
They also have a gingko tree in the garden. They are unique with their fan-shaped leaves and are neither deciduous or conifer trees, but are in their own family. The only other place I've seen them is on ISU's campus.
Surprise lilies.
A statue of a girl and her greyhound in a park.
Buckingham Palace.
A bunch of cub scouts--how cute.
Statue of a woman carrying wheat and a sickle.
A bag-piper.
Cupid.
A memorial to soldiers lost at sea in WWI.
The Tower of London--a very old palace and prison.
Tower Bridge on the Thames.
Traitor's Gate.
All Hallows by the Tower.
I went to Mass again in the little town of Potter's Bar. The readings were about as close to fire and brimstone as they get. I am continually thankful for God's mercy and the readings reminded me to be thankful for His justice too. Sometimes the punishment for causing anguish in the vulnerable and experiencing no remorse is not seen in this life but the next. It brings me peace of mind to know that God hears the cries of those who have been wronged and is angered by evil. The readings are also a gentle reminder of how important it is to listen to your conscious. The fact that God is just is also evident in what I've been reading in the bible. Leviticus is full of old, just Jewish laws like an eye for an eye. It also warns of the terrible punishments that God would dole out to the Jews if they didn't follow His commandments.
